It might even have a funky smell or some burnt pieces of food that just won’t come off. Here is the complete guide on how to clean and maintain your grill so it lasts longer and keeps its great condition!

Cleaning the Grill Grate: What to Look Out For?

After a successful barbecue evening comes the task of cleaning the grill grate: grease, marinade, and meat juices leave a stubborn crust that must be removed after each use. If this is not done, the taste of the grilled food will be compromised the next time it is enjoyed. It is also important to clean the grate for hygienic reasons.

When cleaning the grill grate, the following tips are helpful: If you grill with charcoal, you can use the ashes to clean the grate. All you need is an old rag: Dampen it first and then dip it into the ash. Use the ash-water mixture to vigorously rub your grill grate. The ash acts as an abrasive that removes even stubborn encrustations. Once all the residue has been rubbed off, all you have to do is rinse your grill thoroughly with clean water.

In addition to this simple tool, you can also use specially developed cleaning agents to clean your grill quickly and efficiently. Cleaning sprays, also known as barbecue cleaners, are particularly suitable for stubborn crusts.

You can also clean your grill grate with conventional oven cleaner: Simply spray the grate generously with the product and then let it rest in a tub or in a large plastic bag – for at least a few hours, better overnight. After soaking, dirt and food residue can be removed wonderfully. You can use either a hard sponge or a special grill brush for this. Finally, rinse with clean water and the grill grate is clean.

With gas grills, you can also simply free the grate – but only if your gas grill has a lid. Even stubborn grease stains can be removed in this way. Just leave the dirty grill grate in the grill and turn it up to full so that the greatest possible heat is generated. This way, the fat on the grate is burned and falls off all by itself. You then only have to remove the remains and clean up a little. If possible, you should only burn the grill while it is still hot. Heating it up again would be an unnecessary waste of gas.

To clean your enameled grill grate, a grill brush with brass bristles is excellent: Brass bristles clean surfaces such as enamel, stainless steel, or chrome reliably and gently. However, you should not use coarse steel brushes. Alternatively, you can also crumple up a medium-sized piece of aluminum foil and use it as a brush.

Then sprinkle coarse sea salt on top of your barbecue grates and rub them vigorously back-and-forth with a ball of crumpled aluminum foil. Finally, wipe the grill grates with paper towels and you’re done!

Cleaning the grill grate: with cola?

Coke is one of those great all-purpose home remedies that can be used to tackle numerous everyday problems. Did you know it’s also an effective way to clean your barbecue grill? To do this, pour some cola over a hot grill grate and allow it to sit for about 15 minutes. Then scrub with ease using a grill brush.

Cleaning the barbecue grate: with baking soda?

Did you know that soft drink isn’t your only option for cleaning your BBQ grates? To give them a good scrub, pour some dry baking soda over the hot grate and use tongs to rub it back and forth (just like you would with coke). Once the grate is clean, rinse it under hot water and scrub again for good measure.

Cleaning the grill grate with newspaper: this is how to do it

And if you don’t want to waste your diet coke, this is a good alternative. Simply roll up some newspaper and use it to scrub the grate back and forth on all sides until it’s clean. You can also do this with aluminum foil for easy cleanup!

If you follow these steps regularly keeping your grill grate clean will be super simple.

The correct cleaning of the grill – step by step

Whether you grill with charcoal, gas, or completely electric: The cleaning of the respective devices differs in some essential points. First, let’s start with cleaning a charcoal grill, as this form of grilling is still the absolute favorite.

Cleaning a charcoal grill

  1. Wait until the grill and also the charcoal has cooled down completely
  2. Dispose of the cold charcoal – galvanized buckets with lids are excellent for this purpose
  3. Remove the remaining ash in the kettle and then empty the ash box as well
  4. Make sure that the ventilation slots are free.
  5. Special tip: Wrap the grill grate in damp newspaper and leave it to rest for a few hours – even overnight.
  6. After a few hours or even the next day, simply remove the newspaper and wipe the grate clean with a steel sponge and a mixture of water and detergent.

Cleaning an electric grill

  1. Wait until the entire grill has cooled down completely
  2. Make sure that the power plug is unplugged to avoid a short circuit
  3. Remove the water tray and simply rinse it under running water and with a little detergent
  4. Clean the grill grate with a standard brush (no steel wool!) to remove any remaining dirt.
  5. Some fine motor skills are required – residues and dirt should be scraped off carefully.
  6. Afterward, it is advisable to roughly wipe over both the inside and the outside with a damp cloth and some washing-up liquid

Cleaning a gas grill

  1. Wait until the entire grill has cooled down completely
  2. Remove the grease drip tray and the collection basin and clean both with water and a little detergent
  3. Open the lid of your gas grill, turn on the burner and press the ignition button
  4. Close the lid
  5. The residue will now turn into ash, producing smoke
  6. The process usually takes 20 – 30 minutes, during which time you let the grill do its work in silence
  7. As soon as no more smoke is emitted, the gas grill is burnt out – turn off the appliance and now open the lid again
  8. Use a stainless steel brush to remove the last remnants and brush off the grill grate completely.
  9. Special tip: wet a kitchen towel with oil and spread it on the grate – excess ash will be removed, a non-stick coating will form and the grate will be maintained thanks to the oil
  10. As an additional step, you should brush both the boiler and the burners once a season
