How to Choose the Best Electric Fence for Pigs

1. The power source

Many tips suggest that choosing an AC source is best. If your agricultural fence is in a remote area, choose a DC or solar charger to power the fence.

AC with outlets is usually cheaper than DC, while DC is easier to locate but requires batteries. The advantage of solar is that you have no operating costs.

2. The fence wire

Compared with the poly wire, tape, rope, steel wire, steel wire consumes less energy. But the aluminum wire is less resistant to electricity than steel wire. The trick is to use a low impedance charger for poly rope or tape.

3. The number of wire strands

There are two things you need to consider in this section. You must divide the charger rating distance by the number of strands to select a mileage charger that meets this requirement if you are using multiple wire fences. You must increase the power requirement when adding wires.

4. The fence range

You can see that all chargers give information about the mileage or fence area, so you need to know what distance you are using the charger for. And remember that the characteristics of the fenced area for a single-strand steel wire fence without weeds.

5. What about the weed?

Weeds affect the charger because they increase the amount of energy used. However, you can use a low impedance charger to maintain a high voltage at your yard fence even if the power source is infested with weeds.

6. The animal species

The large electric power that causes high shock will help you avoid large animals, long hair, claws, and even aggressive species such as bulls or horses. So depending on the animals you protect inside the fence or against outside the fence choose the charger with the appropriate energy.

Some notes about the animals when you use the charger for the electric fence.

For pigs, you need less shocking energy to control them. The charger with 3,5 to 6 joules of power is sufficient.

For goats and pests, install medium-strength fence chargers to drive them away from your garden.

For more dangerous animals such as predators like wolves or foxes, you will need to install a 3-8 joule charger system that can shock and scare them away.
